Preserving Church Records Together: A Sustainable Model

Abstract

Staff from three academic libraries will discuss how they collaborated on a grant to make materials from historic rural churches publicly accessible online. They will discuss:

  • selecting, digitizing, and physical transferring materials;
  • creating shared metadata standards;
  • building a site in Omeka S;
  • and supporting long-term curation of community content.

They'll also highlight how collaboration helped them navigate

  • staffing changes,
  • vendor issues,
  • remote coordination,
  • and a grant extension.

This project involved Columbia Theological Seminary, Mercer University, and Emory University - who joined forces to collaborate on the Historic Rural Churches grant funded by the Lettie Pate Evans Foundation.
