The Mansfield Shield & Banner thus notices the decease of this old and most estimable citizen:

"Gen. James HEDGES, one of the earliest settlers of this county, died at his residence in Mansfield on Monday night [16 October?].

His life was an eventful one in the early history of Ohio - he has filled several im[p]ortant official position[s], and was universally esteemed as a charitable and order- loving citizen - and emphatically as an honest man. The poor, especially, will have cause to lament his sudden demise, for he was particularly kind and liberal to them.

His remains were attended to their last resting place py [by] a large concourse of citizens, where they received the last rites of the Masonic Order, of which he was a member, with military respect for his services in the war of 1812."
