Mrs. Nancy Ann Pence, past 68 years old, wife of Joseph M. Pence of Smith township, died at her home at 6:15 o'clock Tuesday [21 May] morning after a long illness which was complicated by pneumonia. At the time of her death, she was 68 years, 10 months and 24 days old.

Mrs. Pence was born in Smith township on February 27, 1860 to William Hedges and Lucinda Knott Hedges [mother's first name may be wrong]. She spent practically her entire life in Smith township.

On February 18, 1883 she was married to Joseph M. Pence who survives her, together with two sons, Melvin C. Pence of Columbia City, and Arthur A. Pence of Smith township. Nine grandchildren also survive.

One son, Heber J. Pence was killed on March 16 [of the same year, 1929] at the Line street crossing of the Pennsylvania railroad in Columbia City by a fast train.

With the passing of Mrs. Pence, Smith township feels the loss of another from the pioneer families. The decedent was held in the highest esteem by her friends and neighbors.

Funeral services will be held at the home northwest of Collins, Thursday afternoon [23 May] at 2 o'clock. Burial will be made in the Blue River cemetery.

Funeral services were held at the home at 2 o'clock Thursday [23 May] afternoon for Nancy Ann Pence, wife of Joseph M. Pence of Smith township.

Rev. A. W. Pugh officiated, assisted by Rev. N. McCoy.

The pall bearers were:

  • W. A. Smith,
  • Willis Rhoads,
  • R. Goodyear,
  • Homer Shaffer,
  • William Black and
  • Cyrus Smith.

Music for the funeral was furnished by Mr. and Mrs. Ed Hively.

The flower bearers were Mrs. Jesse Garrison and Della Delland.

Interment was made in the Blue River Cemetery.
