Herman R. Frank, 84, senior member of the H. R. Frank and Sons Greenhouse, died at his home on state road 205 at 10:20 p.m. Friday [4 December]. He had been in failing health for the past several years and for almost nine years had not been able to be at the greenhouse to engage in the work there.

Mr. Frank was a native of Darke county, Ohio, and was born on September 13, 1880, a son of Wilson and Amy Puterbaugh Frank. His formative years were spent in Darke county, and as a young man he went to Richmond [Indiana] where he was employed as a foreman for the Graves Greenhouse.

On March 3, 1904, he was united in marriage to Amelia Fox. They established their first home in Richmond and after one year there moved to Portland [Indiana] where Mr. Frank, in association with his father and two brothers, opened a new greenhouse. They continued their association with the firm until 1912 when they purchased a farm near Custer, Michigan. In 1921, they returned to Portland and resumed their work with the greenhouse.

In March 1929 the Frank family came to Columbia City where they opened the H. R. Frank and Sons Greenhouse. Wilson Frank and his brother, Hugh H. Frank, were associated with their father in the establishment of the business. In 1946 two other sons, Glenn P. Frank and Dale W. Frank, became members of the firm.

Mr. Frank was a member of the Blue River Church of the Brethren and he has been a Deacon in the church since 1924. His wife preceded him in death on August 27, 1960.

The surviving relatives include five sons, Wilson Frank, 3 Holden Road, Hugh H. Frank, R 2, Marion Frank of North Webster, Glenn P. Frank, R 1, Dale W. Frank, 802 South Line street; two daughters, Miss Alice Frank, at home and Mrs. Wayne (Amy) McKinney, 210 W. Ellsworth street; 20 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he has been preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Harry; two sisters, Elizabeth and Edith; one daughter, Evelyn; one son, Marcus.

The body is at the Smith and Sons Funeral Home where friends may call after 7 this evening [Tuesday, December 8]. At noon Monday [December 14], it will be taken to the BLue River Church of the Brethren to lie in state until the hour of the service. The Rev. Oliver Dearing, church pastor, and the Rev. Howard Kreider of Milford, will officiate at the funeral services at 2 p. m.

Committal services and burial will follow the church rites in the South Park cemetery.

The green house will be closed all day Monday.
