Harry Lazarus, age 84, a resident of Valdosta since 1908, died at his home on Troupe street early this morning [18 Nov] after a lengthy illness.

The body will remain at the Sineath Funeral Home [308 N. Patterson Street, Valdosta] until time for the funeral which will be held at the Jewish Synagogue [Temple Israel, Valdosta] tomorrow afternoon [19 Nov] at 3 o'clock.

Mr. Lazarus is survived by

  • his widow;
  • three sons,
    1. Louis of Valdosta,
    2. Sam of Brewton, Ala., and
    3. William of Trenton, Fla.;
  • five daughters,
    1. Mrs. Lucille Taylor and
    2. Mrs. Myrtle Waters, of Quitman [Georgia],
    3. Mrs. Ann Zelkind, of Lake City, Fla.,
    4. Miss Rose Lazarus of Valdosta, and
    5. Mrs. Ethel Hopkins of Brewton, Ala.;
  • six brothers,
    1. William Lazarus of Sparks [Georgia?],
    2. Louis Lazarus of Moultrie [Georgia],
    3. Israel Lazarus and 
    4. Philip Lazarus of Quitman, and
    5. Sam and 
    6. Joe Lazarus of Valdosta;
  • three sisters,
    1. Mrs. Sarah Michelson, Perry, Fla.,
    2. Mrs. Freda Rosenberg of Jacksonville, Fla., and
    3. Mrs. Reba Bohrman of Lake City, Fla., 
  • and five grandchildren.

Mr. Lazarus was born in Lithuania and came to this country 61 years ago [around 1885]. He came directly to South Georgia and lived in this section from that time until his death. During his long residence here he was engaged in the mercantile business. Ill health forced his retirement from active business several years ago and for two years prior to his death [since about 1944] he was confined to his home.

At the time of his dea[t]h all of his children were at his bedside.

Through the years of his residence here Mr. Lazarus enjoyed the friendship and esteem of all with whom he came in contact and his death, although not unexpected, is the cause of much genuine sorrow in the community.

Funeral services were held at the Jewish Synagogue [Temple Israel, Valdosta] yesterday [19 Nov] at 3 o'clock for Harry Lazarus, well known Valdostan, who passed away at his home here on Monday [18 Nov]. Rabbi J. S. Gallnger was in charge of the services. Interment followed in the Jewish cemetery here [Sunset Hill].

A large number of out of town friends and relatives at[t]ended the funeral.
